Creating a soothing atmosphere for patients by transporting them to the clouds. In this design, we met two challenges:

– a tight Manhattan space to create multiple dental suites along with an inviting reception/waiting area

– along with a desire to create an atmosphere that calmed those who often have some elevated vital signs when visiting.

The first goal was accomplished by “breaking the box” by creating a visually welcoming elliptical waiting area that took maximum advantage of the small space, with a custom built-in bench facing the friendly fireplace that already existed in this old office building.

The second goal was to arrange for a local painting teacher to come in and ala Michelangelo, paint various cloud formations in each dental suite, so that patients as they lie back in their chair, will be visually transported to a higher “plane” of existence for the moment.
